This distinctive yastik rug from Sivas carries the quiet intimacy of a textile woven not for trade, but for a home.

In old Anatolian interiors, these small carpets were traditionally made as double-sided cushions, stuffed with reed or straw and placed in the seating alcoves of the “şark köşesi” — the cozy, floor-level gathering spaces of traditional houses. Most Sivas yastiks followed a familiar visual language: red grounds, dark central motifs, and practical symmetry suited for everyday use.

This piece tells a different story.

Its palette immediately signals a more personal intention. Instead of the customary red field and black medallion, the weaver chose a deep black ground paired with a striking turquoise center, suggesting a rug created for a dowry rather than daily household production. Such color choices often reflected individual taste, hope, and identity — making pieces like this far more unique than standard village output.
